Mayor Larry Lavagnino is a native of Santa Maria and has served on the City Council since 1996. He was re-elected as Mayor in November, 2008.

Being born and raised in Santa Maria, Mayor Lavagnino has seen the community grow from 10,000 people in the late 1940s and early 50s to the growing city of more than 90,000 people.

A graduate of Santa Maria Union High School, he attended Allan Hancock Community College then Loyola University in Los Angeles. He served with the U.S. Navy.

His public service career continued from 1965 to 1980 as a County of Santa Barbara staff assistant to County Supervisors Curtis Tunnell and Harrell Fletcher, respectively. From 1980 to 1994 he worked for energy companies; first with Western LNG Terminal Association, the Southern California Gas Company, then for the Pacific Interstate Company.

Mr. Lavagnino currently serves as a Board member for these organizations: Marian Medical Center Foundation, the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District, and the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments. Formerly, he was Chairman of the City of Santa Maria Planning Commission in 1996, and served as a City Council member from 1996 to 2003.

Among his most important City Council accomplishments are voting for the Abel Maldonado Community Youth Center and the new Santa Maria Public Library, and securing $46 million in funding to repair the Santa Maria River Levee.

He is married to his lovely wife, Donna, and has four children. The Mayor is at City Hall each weekday and his calendar is full of appearances before local school and civic groups. He has always asked people to call him at home with their comments.
